Imago Therapy

Image Fulfillment with Windsor Imago TherapistImago Therapy Logo

Imago Therapy, Windsor & Essex County – The term Imago is a Latin word for image. Imago theory states that each of us unconsciously forms an image of a romantic partner. As we develop romantic relationships, we seek out potential partners with positive traits which are familiar and comfortable.

As the relationship develops further and passes through the honeymoon phase, we begin to notice that our partner also has negative traits that we were initially willing to overlook. What we may not recognize, is that our partner was attracted to us for the same reasons – the familiar positive traits – and that they may be noticing our own negative traits.

Needs Vs Nurturing

It is at this point in our relationships that a power struggle can develop, along with feelings of disillusionment, resentment, bitterness and frustration. Unfortunately, in our modern society, it has become easy and acceptable to give up and leave the relationship through divorce or separation. However, as we seek our next partner, we may run the risk of taking the problems – the negative traits and behaviours – with us to the next relationship. This can result in a vicious cycle of failed relationships.

Much of this happens unconsciously – we don’t intentionally seek out intimate partners that fulfill our own needs. And for the most part, it is not our intention to ignore our partner’s needs. The result, however, can be a power struggle of meeting our own needs versus nurturing those of our partner.

Imago Therapy Offers An Alternative

Imago Therapy offers us a way to become aware of our needs, our partner’s needs, and how we meet or ignore those needs. Imago shows us how to develop our relationship into a deeper bond of love and fulfillment based on reality, and understand the reasons for coming together. Imago gives us the tools and strategies to create open dialogue, love freely, and nurture each other.

What Conscious Partners Know (con’t): 16 and 17

We are continuing our journey of moving a relationship from the unconscious, old brain, reactive modality to the conscious, new brain, and intentional modality.
