Talking About Communication

The Relationship Wizard

On Wed. Feb. 17, 2021, from 1 -2 pm, I am going to be talking about Communication on our live Facebook show Soiree Lifestyle Series 2020. Communication is always the biggest problem in the office. The issues could be anything – money, sex, the kids, in-laws, job, the cat the dog – it really doesn’t matter what the issue is, the problem is two people learning to talk to each other about whatever the issue is in a way that can lead to a solution.

I am going to examine why communication can be difficult and also why it is absolutely imperative that two people do learn to communicate well if they want to have a great relationship. And I will touch on the communication process we use in the office to make sure folks can talk to each other in a way they both feel heard. It is called the Intentional Dialogue process and more recently The Safe Conversation process.

Dr. Harville Hendrix & Dr. Helen LaKelly Hunt

What I am really excited about is to let you know that the following week Dr. Harville Hendrix and his wife, Dr. Helen LaKelly Hunt will be on our show again. They are the creators of Imago Relationship Therapy and are probably the two best-known relationship therapists in the world. I say this not only because they have sold over 4 million copies of their book Getting the Love You Want, but even more important because they have trained over 2500 therapists around the world practicing Imago Relationship Therapy in 59 countries.

My claim to fame is being the first international therapist Harville trained back in 1989 but as I said, IRT is now practiced in 59 countries. He was on Oprah’s show 17 times – one being the show she won an Emmy for. So if you get the chance tune in next week Feb. 24, 1-2 pm on Facebook – Soiree Lifestyle Series 2020 and catch what they have to say. You can also get it on the replay if you miss the live show.

Safe Conversations

I’m not sure what they will be talking about but I know that for the last 10 years they have been focusing on what they call Safe Conversations. We have always used a particular method for communicating in the office but more recently they are taking the communication process all of us as Imago therapists used in the office out into the wider arena. Parents and kids, teachers and students, employers and employees. Talking is the main way we communicate as humans, but so often we don’t do it very well. Their mission is to teach a process whereby we can all feel that what we have to say is heard and respected and that we can do the same for whomever we are in conversation with.

Truth 7: Negativity is a Wish in Disguise

We’ve reached Truth 7 in the book, Negativity is a Wish in Disguise. Harville, in this chapter, is dealing with frustrations, which tend to be the hardest piece of the Imago system. Why? Typically, what frustrates your partner is difficult for you to change because often it is your weak suit. For example, way back, […]

Truth 6 (cont.): Negativity is Invisible Abuse

Continuing with Truth #6: Negativity is Invisible Abuse. Last week Helen suggested that there are three key ways we can unknowingly slip into negativity. They are: Critical thinking, Competition, Constructive criticism. So how do you stop being negative if it is habitual? Harville and Helen’s solution for themselves was pretty straightforward. How to Stop Being Negative […]

Truth 6: Negativity is Invisible Abuse

On to Truth 6: Negativity is Invisible Abuse from Making Marriage Simple For the last four or five years I have tried to help couples understand what I now believe is the the fastest way forward for their relationship, which is to protect the Space Between.
