Today we are looking at Enneagram 3: the Achiever or Performer. We will do this by exploring their motivations, downsides, movements, and wings.
The word Enneagram is derived from the Greek words ennea, meaning “nine” and gram meaning “what is written or drawn”. The enneagram symbol contains nine personality types, each located at different points. They contain three parts: an outer circle, a triangle, and a hexad, a six-pointed figure. These represent the way we all move through life. Remember, Enneagram explores not only who we are but, more importantly, the why and how and the motivations behind what we do.
Three 3 Motivation
Threes are motivated by the need to be productive, achieve success, be recognized, and avoid failure at all costs. They value competency and want to make the world a more efficient place. At their best, threes are able to make things happen, get things done, and are willing to take on challenges. They believe it is up to them to attain results. They have an endless amount of energy, are extremely charismatic, and are very social. Threes are optimistic and upbeat and can motivate others and are happy and playful in their interactions with others.
Enneagram 3 Downsides
On the downside, because they think they can do anything, they can be workaholics with a need to create an image of success; they have to prove they are worthwhile (to themselves first as well as to others). By doing too much, they can avoid emotions and tend to compare themselves with others who do things better. It can be exhausting to always be “on” and be the best at everything.
Movement
The movement of the three is to six and nine. The positive move toward six (The Investigator) allows them to become more vulnerable and more in touch with emotions. This includes their emotions and others. They are also willing to spend more time with family and friends and not just work. The positive move toward nine (The Peacemaker) allows a three to slow down and relax and see life from a broader point of view. That WHAT they are doing isn’t WHO they are: they are not their image.
Enneagram 3 Wings
The wings for the three are two and four. Threes with a more developed two-wing (The Helper) tend to be warmer, more encouraging, sociable, popular, and seductive. Threes with a more developed four-wing (The Individualist) tend to be more introspective, sensitive, artistic, imaginative, and pretentious.
So, there you have it, you threes out there. Keep in mind, this is just the first kick at the can. Those of you who want more information please check out my wife, Crystal’s, website; Journey to Inner Wisdom. She will be having another Enneagram workshop in June. All the best and next week I’ll take a look at the Ennea four: The Individualist.
